Old Valentines Day cards are a wonderful way for families to have a little insight into our ancestors lives. These were often kept by the recipient and sometimes passed down in the family. Early cards were hand made and the text was handwritten. As time went by, cards were mass produced with the verse included, though our ancestors still often wrote a few lines expressing their love. In more recent years this has extended to newspapers & social media and the ability to place a notice or post to your loved one. Interestingly, the humble card has survived the test of time and is still regularly given.
If you a lucky to be the custodian of cards passed down in the family, treasure them! If you haven’t seen any in your family, it may be worth asking the older generations in the family about the traditions in their era and if you are lucky they may have some cards to show you.
