Genealogy Dataset in Australian States – Tasmania – Tasmanian Names Index

Each month we look at a genealogy dataset in Australia or New Zealand.  This month we look at Tasmania and the Tasmanian Names Index.

Tasmania definitely know how to be helpful when providing information and access to their family history records. They have compiled a “Tasmanian Names Index” which searches a variety of records from various sources, this includes births, deaths, marriages, convicts, immigration, naturalisations and much more.

One thing to keep in mind, if you can’t find your ancestors and you think they should be in the Tasmanian records is that, amongst other things, variations in recording of names occurred.  Sometimes, this was accidental and sometimes this was done on purpose ie: to hide a convict past and can make it more difficult to find the person you are looking for.
