Research your family tree during family history month
August is Family History month, consequently there are many events, talks, workshops and webinars available in every state.
Whether you are just starting out, have been researching for a while, are a regular researcher or a professional genealogist or record agent, there is something for everyone. There is the ability to learn new skills, the possibility to break down brick walls and groups to share your journey including the joys and frustrations.
So, what has Australia and New Zealand got in store over “Family History Month”? Below are just a few of the possibilities to consider:
New Zealand
“Family history research day 2021 (2oom Out 2oom In)” – A one day event in Wellington on the 7 August 2021. There are many exhibitors and guest speakers covering topics like “Giving depth to your family history”, “Getting best results from FamilySearch”, “Postcard travels with my ancestors” and “Getting started with DNA”

The Christchurch Family History Expo has two days of talks and activities on the 21st and 22nd August as well as many exhibitors. For more details or to download the programme, click here.
Australia
Each state hold their own events, here is a small selection:
ACT
FHACT and the ACT heritage Library are staging an exhibition “Heritage Matters” which will be available to visit during the month of August. There is also a zoom presentation “The 1939 Register for Family Historians” on the 31 August 2021.

NEW SOUTH WALES
The State Library of New South Wales are running a series of free online workshops across the month of August ranging from “Convicts, settlers and soldiers”, “Why old newspapers are great for family research”, “Seven strategies to get unstuck”, “Oral history for family historians” and more.

NORTHERN TERRITORY
“Family History – Come and Try Day” is being held on the 6th August.

QUEENSLAND
Many online workshops are available across the coming month, these include “Family History Online”, “Researching your Scottish Ancestors online”, a “DNA Case Study”, :The Australian Joint Copying Project in Trove: and many more.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
A talk called “Click: South Australian Professional Photographers from the 1860s to the 1930s” at the South Australian Library on 17 August 2021. Further info here.
TASMANIA
Tasmania are holding a range of talks and workshops from the 3 August to the 31 August covering arrange of topics such as “Remembering convict women and orphan school children”, “Using DNA to solve family mysteries”, “Naturalisations, aliens and citizenship records” and lots more.

VICTORIA
On the 4th August you can learn how to “Digitise your photo collection” or on the 13th August there is a workshop “Researching family history online for begginners”. Further information about both these events can be found here.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
On the 4th August there are talks “On your way – resources at the State Library and FHWA library and resource centre and tackling DNA”, then on the 5th August, there is “Discovering hidden gems – focusing on Western Australia, Irish and Germanic research”.
