Samantha John – BSc, DipFamHist, PLCGS, MAAGRA
Researcher Type: Genealogist & Record Agent
Special Interest: Solving your mysteries and adding flesh to your family’s bones by finding and telling their stories! I specialise in Australian, British, and Irish research, with pioneering Victoria and the English Midlands (Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Leicestershire) my particular strengths. I also have a special interest in DNA and genetic genealogy.
Biography: I am an experienced genealogical researcher of over 35 years standing with a passion for history in context and finding the stories of your ancestors, not just the dates.
With a background in science (BSc), I am well placed not only to assist with traditional research but to use DNA as an additional tool to help solve your genealogy problem. I have also completed the Diploma of Family History through the University of Tasmania. Additionally, I hold Professional Learning Certificates in Genealogical Studies in Methodology, Australian Records, Irish Records and DNA & Genetic Genealogy through the International Institute of Genealogical Studies, and certificates in Italian and New Zealand Records. As a life-long learner, I am currently continuing my genealogical education through the IIGS in English & Welsh, Scottish and German records.
Apart from client work, I am also a member of the Media Team for RootsTech (the world’s largest family history conference), co-convenor of the Midlands & East Anglia Discussion Circle at the Genealogical Society of Victoria and a moderator at The Genealogy Squad, a vibrant Facebook group with over 64 000 members globally.
I have published articles in the ‘Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly’ journal in 2021 and 2023.
Services: Services range from validating your existing research, making sense of your DNA results, helping you break through a genealogical brick wall, building your tree from the beginning or finding your biological relatives or missing family members. Having trouble reading an old document? Or do you need your family, local or company history written up? I am also available as a speaker or educator.
I fully abide by the Codes of Ethics of the Australasian Association of Genealogists and Record Agents and the Association of Professional Genealogists.
